Hilary used to be such a practical girl. Then she let the stories out.

Now she creates worlds, people, and problems that are grounded in real life, if you accept that real life has magic around every turn.
She also teaches Writing and English, writes whenever and wherever she can, and reads as much as her eyes can handle. She plays superheroes and dress up games and reads books in bed with her children, and plays at homesteading and world traveling with her husband.

For the hunt, Hilary is giving away Book 1: Shift of Shadow and Soul

There are three kinds of magic in the world, and Corentine has the wrong one.

Long ago, the Restless King forced Corentine's people into hiding as he scoured their blood for the SoulShifter. When Corentine learns she possesses some of the forbidden Shifter magic, she must hide her power or risk the same death her twin suffered.

Raised to trust no one, she rejects the General's son Sy, until she realizes his family secrets might be the key to unlocking hers. When his brother turns against them, they are forced to fight family to save what's left of their home, or accept banishment to find a new future.

If Coren and Sy can't convince their people to accept the light of Shifter magic, the growing Shadow will ruin everyone's chance of freedom.

MEET MY GUEST AUTHOR

Today, I'm hosting Claire Lazebnik for the YA Scavenger Hunt!

Claire is the author of five novels for adults and five YA novels, including Epic Fail and Things I Should Have Known. With Lynn Kern Koegel, PhD, she co-wrote the non-fiction books Overcoming Autism and Growing Up on the Spectrum. She has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Self Magazine, among many other publications, and contributed a monologue to the anthology play Motherhood Out Loud

Find out more information about Claire by checking out her website or go here for book ordering info.

ABOUT CLAIRE'S BOOK

Things I Should Have Known is a story about sisterhood, autism, and first love. Chloe Mitchell is on a quest to find love for her autistic sister, Ivy. Ethan seems like the perfect match, so it's unfortunate that his older brother, David, is one of Chloe’s least favorite people.

Chloe, Ivy, David, and Ethan are soon spending lots of time together and Chloe is hopeful her plan will work, until she realizes just how much she doesn't know, both about Ivy and about herself.

And now for Claire's exclusive bonus material for Things I Should Have Known:

Ivy, Chloe, David and Ethan Write Haikus

Claire LaZebnik:

If you’ve read Things I Should Have Known, you know that the two sets of siblings spend a lot of time together. Even though this scene never took place in the book, it certainly could have.

Maybe it’s Chloe’s idea to write haikus on a lazy rainy afternoon when they’ve all already watched a movie and no one wants to leave the house. She would hope that the strict line and syllable structure would appeal to Ivy and Ethan, who both have autism and like things to be clear and literal.

So maybe they’re all sitting around with pads of paper and pencils and Chloe says, “You have five minutes to write a haiku. They’re usually about nature, but they don’t have to be. Three lines, the first with five syllables, the second with seven syllables, and the third with five syllables. Okay? We’ll write and then we’ll read them out loud.”

Ethan would probably complain that it’s a stupid idea, and David would probably tell him he’s being rude to Chloe, and then agree that it’s stupid, and Ivy would worry that hers wouldn’t be any good. But eventually they’d settle down and write their haikus, and then they’d read them  out loud.

And I think they’d end up something like this:

Chloe’s Haiku:
The house closes in
Just as I’m planning to leave.
Embrace or prison?

David’s Haiku:
You’re supposed to use
Five/seven/five syllables?
Screw that.

Ethan’s Haiku:
I think that Marvel
Makes a lot of good movies.
Logan was the best.

Ivy’s Haiku:
It’s raining out now.
I hear the water fall down.
But it’s dry in here.

Chloe’s Second Haiku (directed at David):
Just try to write one
Without breaking all the rules.
It wouldn’t kill you.

David’s Second Haiku (directed at Chloe):
Conform? No, thank you.
Only sheep count syllables.
I’m my own person.

And then Ethan would probably say, “This is boring,” and Ivy would say, “Let’s watch TV,” and that would be the end of haiku writing.

****

Haha. Thanks Claire! These characters have amazing chemistry. :)

Remember, you can buy Things I Should Have Known here, and if you'd like to follow the author online, she's on twitter.

MEET MY GUEST AUTHOR

Today, I'm hosting Lilliam Rivera for the YA Scavenger Hunt!

Lilliam Rivera is the author of the young adult novel THE EDUCATION OF MARGOT SANCHEZ, forthcoming from Simon & Schuster on February 21, 2017. She is a 2016 Pushcart Prize winner and freelance writer with work in Tin House, Los Angeles Times, Latina, among others. Originally from the Bronx, New York, Lilliam now lives in Los Angeles with her family.

Find out more information by checking out her website or find ordering info for her book here!

ABOUT LILLIAM'S BOOK

Pretty in Pink comes to the South Bronx in this bold and romantic coming-of-age novel about dysfunctional families, good and bad choices, and finding the courage to question everything you ever thought you wanted—from debut author Lilliam Rivera.

Things/People Margot Hates:

  • Mami, for destroying her social life
  • Papi, for allowing Junior to become a Neanderthal
  • Junior, for becoming a Neanderthal
  • The supermarket
  • Everyone else

After “borrowing” her father’s credit card to finance a more stylish wardrobe, Margot Sanchez suddenly finds herself grounded. And by grounded, she means working as an indentured servant in her family’s struggling grocery store to pay off her debts.

With each order of deli meat she slices, Margot can feel her carefully cultivated prep school reputation slipping through her fingers, and she’s willing to do anything to get out of this punishment. Lie, cheat, and maybe even steal…

Margot’s invitation to the ultimate beach party is within reach and she has no intention of letting her family’s drama or Moises—the admittedly good looking but outspoken boy from the neighborhood—keep her from her goal.

You can preorder The Education of Margot Sanchez here.

Here's the author on twitter.

SCAVENGER HUNT POST

For my part in the YA Scavenger Hunt, I'm honored to be hosting one of my dear friends, Lori M. Lee! Lori writes riveting tales rich with vivid world building and kick a$$ characters. I'm speaking as a fangirl, not her pal. Lori knows fantasy!

Here's the official bio:

Lori is the author of Gates of Thread and Stone and The Infinite. She has a borderline obsessive fascination with unicorns, is fond of talking in capslock, and loves to write about magic, manipulation, and family.

Find out more information by checking out Lori's website. Or buy her books here

EXCLUSIVE CONTENT

Today, Lori is spotlighting Gates of Thread and Stone

"In a city of walls and secrets, where only one man is supposed to possess magic, seventeen-year-old Kai struggles to keep hidden her own secret—she can manipulate the threads of time. When Kai was eight, she was found by Reev on the riverbank, and her “brother” has taken care of her ever since. Kai doesn’t know where her ability comes from—or where she came from. All that matters is that she and Reev stay together, and maybe one day move out of the freight container they call home, away from the metal walls of the Labyrinth. Kai’s only friend is Avan, the shopkeeper’s son with the scandalous reputation that both frightens and intrigues her.

Then Reev disappears. When keeping silent and safe means losing him forever, Kai vows to do whatever it takes to find him. She will leave the only home she’s ever known and risk getting caught up in a revolution centuries in the making. But to save Reev, Kai must unravel the threads of her past and face shocking truths about her brother, her friendship with Avan, and her unique power."

Now, to tantalize you even more, here's a sneak peek into the final book of Lori's trilogy, Gates of Thread and Stone 3:

Something darted overhead. I startled, ducking and scanning the skies. A blast of wind ripped my hood off my head. I wrestled with the fabric, struggling to see past the hair whipping against my cheeks. I jerked my hood into place again as the rhythmic whump of heavy wings circled above. A couple steps in front of me, Kronos paused. Then he snapped back his robe, his hand darting out to grip my wrist.

Something metal, black, and winged landed in a crouch before us. My heart clawed into my throat. I went for the torch blade sheathed at my waist, but the pressure of Kronos’s fingers around my wrist stopped me from drawing it.

The creature straightened. A chill snaked through me. Every instinct I possessed told me to run. Instead, I held my breath and tried to take comfort in the fact Kronos seemed undaunted by its presence.

It stood over a head taller than Kronos and had a humanlike shape, but it was constructed from a dusky metal. Gray rods coiled through its arms, legs, and neck like muscles and wrapped around its torso like ribs. Where its eyes and nose should have been, there was only the ridged center of metal wires that radiated outward, curving around its head. Beneath the warped bits of metal that connected over its chest, a red glow emanated, as if an energy stone lay nestled within. My fingers tightened around the hilt of my blade as the creature unfurled its enormous wings, panels of scarred metal that stretched to twice its height.

Its gash of a mouth opened, hissing. Slick black saliva oozed between rotting teeth. It smelled rancid, like spoiled meat. Its body might be metal, but there was something organic inside it. Something alive.

It pointed at me with metal claws. Kronos yanked me against his side, nearly enveloping me in his robes. I stumbled, catching myself on his arm, and noticed instantly the sudden stillness—the threads encircled him like a shield, and the wind bent around him, not daring to stir even a strand of his hair.

“She’s with me,” he said. His voice vibrated through me, a physical thing that rumbled the earth.

The creature’s wings twitched. Its mouth stretched wide again. It spoke in a language I couldn’t understand, it’s high, airy voice like razors against my skin. I straightened so that I wasn’t leaning against Kronos’s side. The moment I stepped away from him, the gusting winds returned, tangling the hem of my cloak around my legs.

“She was born of this world,” Kronos said. His hand remained around my wrist. “That is all you need to know.”

The creature released a shrill scream that made me want to curl into a ball and press my palms against my ears. Then its metal wings swept downward, and the creature shot into the sky. Dust swirled around us in its wake. I pulled my wrist out of Kronos’s grip and waved away the choking dryness that coated my lungs with every inhale.

Kronos’s eye tracked the movements of the other creatures that spotted the sky. Then he gave me slight nod and turned his back to me, continuing on.

I hurried after him, careful to copy his steps. “What was that thing?” I asked.

“Border guard,” Kronos said curtly. “You are not yet fully Infinite. It felt you didn’t belong.”

I considered this. “What would it have done with me if—”

“It would be better not to wonder such things.”

I know, amazing right? Told you. Her world building is phenomenal. You don't want to miss her books!

In fact, I was really hoping she'd write 7 more. Yep, seven more books about Kai, Avan, and Reev would make me very happy indeed. Hear that Lori? Of course, that might have to do with the fact that I do so love the #7. ;)

Okay, that's all I have for you here. Good luck on the rest of your GREEN TEAM hunt, and don't forget to enter for the grand prize, one of each of our books (pictured below)!
